Blog ‘Spring Cleaning’ – Day 2

Thanks so much to all of you that participated in the first day of this challenge! I’m going to visit your links today to see what each of you came up with for your elevator pitch. For only having organized this on Monday, there’s a lot more interest than I expected!

If you’re just joining now, welcome! We’re only on the second day, so there’s plenty of time to catch up.

Day 2: Write a List Post

I’m a compulsive list-maker. I even make lists of lists. So it’s natural that this impulse would spread to my blog and Twitter, right? Lists are easy to create and are very often helpful to a lot of people. List posts are likely to be linked to, retweeted, and talked about. It’s also an easy way to give link-love to your favorite bloggers. My Weekly Roundups are an example of a way that I use a list to share some of my favorite links with my readers. Here are a few other lists I’ve posted in the past:

Today’s homework?

  • Write a list post. Visit ProBlogger to read about 8 Reasons Why List Posts are Powerful for Bloggers. If you’re not sure how to format your lists, read this tutorial that provides you with the HTML code you need to create unordered, ordered, and nested lists for a web page.
  • Update your blogroll. Your blogroll is a type of list that sometimes gets a little out of control. I want you to look over it, think about what sites are actually valuable to you, and remove those that aren’t. Check for dead links, too. Maybe even think about taking all those links off your homepage and dedicating an entire page to it. That’s what I do – ridingwithnohands.com/blogroll. If you don’t have a blogroll, no worries. You just have less homework today!

If you’d like to participate, leave me a comment so we can visit your blog and see how you’re doing! You can also link up specific blog posts relating to today’s challenge below:

  1. Hi! I just found your site so I am just starting the 31 Days! I posted my link for my blog http://www.momondealz.com and did one post combining both assignments. I just started the blog 4 weeks ago I am really excited about this!

    • Hi Sharon! I’m about to go visit your blog and check out your post! :)

  2. I’m not sure you would consider this a list post but I’ll let you be the judge: http://zenforyou.dalefg.net/2010/03/conference-101-how-to-survive-your.html. I’m going to update my blogroll. I have them both as a page and on the side. Which do you think should I remove? Thanks for doing this Mariana. Very helpful.

    • Hi Maricris! Thanks for participating! I think that’s definitely a type of list. And a good one that’s sure to get traffic from searches! About your blogroll – you mostly have text links to all your favorite blogs, so that doesn’t slow down the loading of your page. I’d say you could leave those links there. I like the way you categorize them! The dedicated page could be for other links you like.

  3. Wow, this is great! I love writing list posts, which is why I usually do my Top 10 Tuesday posts! I haven’t done Day 2 today, getting sick … a lot going on personal so I may have to do day 2 and 3 2marro if I am feeling better!

    Love following along though!!!

  4. Missed yesterday but starting on this today! Appreciate any tips!
    Thanks so much!

    • Hi Amy! Thanks for joining us! I post new tasks everyday around noon. There’s no rush – you can take longer than the 31 days and just work on it on your own time! There’s a new linky each day so you can share your posts with everyone else.

  5. I just recently did a list post! I think it’s a great way to blog!

  6. Hi, I am now following alone with you on this wonderful idea. Here is my list post from the Disney Social Media Conference: http://www.freeismylife.com/2010/02/review-what-i-learned-from-mickey-mouse_16.html

  7. Hi Mariana!

I’m not only behind in my assignments when it’s only day two but I tried to add my tag line and erased my logo art. Sheesh! I forgot rule one for me-who-often-screws-up-posting which is “use the test blog first!”. Bleh. Thanks for hosting this and and offering all the help. I’d like to promise I’ll catch up, but I know better than that, hehehe. I’ll promise to try, that’s better.

I’m sorry I missed you at Disney – next conference I will look for you. Love the idea of making a list of the people you met. Motivating and helps you to remember everyone.

I didn’t make a list post, but I did add a blogroll page and your button is the first one on my page. You’ll always be my first *blush*. I also added to my own to-do list to get a button for Kelly’s Lucky You. Any recommendations on how to do it or someone to design it?

    Looking forward to more challenges!

    • I can’t believe how many wonderful ladies I didn’t meet at Disney! And there weren’t even *that* many of us! Are you planning on going to BlogHer?

Thank you for adding me to your blogroll, btw! I’m honored to be your first. :) Sorry I didn’t respond to your button question earlier – you took care of it, though, and it looks great! I usually use Picnik for designing buttons. It’s free and easy to use. The only thing I’d change on yours is to make the code say 125×125 instead of 150, as it saves people a step, since most use smaller buttons. It would also take away the blurriness of the button.

  8. Hi, I’m starting today. Just left my link. I have 1 question. Will we get the homework assignment the day before?

    • Hi Nicole! Thanks for participating. I’ve actually been posting the tasks around noon (except for yesterday, which was late due to Internet problems), but there’s no deadline or anything, so don’t feel rushed! I’ve decided to skip the weekends so people can use that time to catch up if need be. Looking forward to checking out your blog!

  9. This is great Mariana! Love it and I love participating. Hoping to have my day 2 up later today. Hubby’s surgery has put me a bit behind! :)

  13. Hi Mariana,

I have a question about the lists. If you list to other blogs do you need to go to those blogs and let the owner know you’ve linked them or is that not really necessary?
    .-= Krista S.´s last blog ..Blog "Spring Cleaning" – Day Two {Write a List Post} =-.

    • No, no need to let the other blog owner know unless you’re ‘borrowing’ something from their blog and want to ask permission. Most blogs will be notified with a pingback when someone links to a particular post.
