Little Lala iPhone/iPod apps

When we travel, I like to be prepared – I load up my iPod touch with lots of new apps for my girls to play with in the car or on the plane. Sure, I could sit them in front of a DVD player, but that just doesn’t offer them as much interaction and learning as some of the educational apps available these days.

The newest apps on my iPod touch are Little Lala and Little Lala’s ABC’s. About an adventurous girl who loves to travel, these apps are perfect since we’re about to hop on a plane in a couple of days! A little bit about the creator of Little Lala:

Lauren Selig is the imaginative woman behind Little Lala. Lauren was given the nickname by her younger sister with whom she spent time traveling the world during her childhood. Together they would explore diverse cultures, people, places and foods. Lauren has spent her adult years continuing that journey with her husband and two young daughters.

Lauren wrote a children’s book about Little Lala, which is where the beautiful illustrations in the two iPhone applications come from. Little Lala is a narrated application, similar to the original book, while Little Lala’s ABC’s are on-the-go flashcards.

Since this is a book, I can read Little Lala aloud to my kids, or I can put it in “play” mode and let them listen to the narration. Better yet – iIf I give my daughter headphones, it gives me a moment of silence! A neat feature is that if I turn off the iPod or change apps in the middle of reading, when we goes back to it, it’ll be at the same place we left it in the book.

There are many flashcard apps available on iTunes, but what stands out about Little Lala’s ABC’s are the beautiful illustrations. Each card features a letter of the alphabet in uppercase and lowercase, an adorable drawing of an animal whose name starts with that letter, and the word for the given animal. I can read the letters and words along with my kids, or turn on the sound and let them listen on their own. For a little more of a challenge, the app also features a “shuffle” mode, in which the letters are chosen at random.

Another neat aspect of both Little Lala apps is that the image flips when you turn the iPod upside down or to the side. This makes it so there’s never a “wrong” way to play.

Since both of these apps are entertaining for my toddler AND preschooler, at only 99 cents each, they’ll quickly pay for themselves! Our only issue is that we only have one iPod to go around…
