The new Super Why! toys

Giveaway is closed. Winners are listed here.

superwhyEver since Super Why! premiered back in the Fall of 2007, my 4-year old and I (and now the toddler, too!) have been huge fans. We’ve waited patiently for Super Why! merchandise to be introduced, and after months of anticipation, I’m happy to say that the wait is OVER!

Developed by Learning Curve and directly inspired by the award-winning kid’s literacy program on PBS, the new line of Super Why! toys is available now at Toys ‘R’ Us stores nationwide. The collection includes a wide range of affordable products, most costing $20 or less.

Learning Curve sent us a variety of the new toys to try out. I regret not capturing the squealing as we opened the packages, but this is a video of the girls playing with them:

Talking Super Why!

Save the Day Talking Super Why
This adorable plush says 8 phrases, including the signature Super Why! song. He’s soft and you just have to squeeze him gently to hear him talk. It’s so easy even MJ could do it. I found the sound volume to be perfect. Not too loud that he’s annoying, but just right that you can easily understand him, and even get up and dance to the theme song. One of my favorite toys out of the bunch, because my baby adores him! He even sleeps with her in the crib now! Save the Day Talking Super Why uses 3 1.5v button batteries and is priced at $19.99.

Style & Pose Princess PrestoSuper Why action figureSuper Why Style & Pose Dolls
Style & Pose Princess Presto comes with a tiara, magic wand, hairbrush, dress, and a detachable plastic cape. She’s fully poseable and has beautiful, bright green eyes. Marsy found her hair a little hard to brush because it’s so curly. Wonder Red is also available.

Super Why Action Figures
The Super Why Action Figure is the perfect model of what I think the animated Super Why should look like! He comes with a detachable plastic cape, a tiny, removable Super Duper computer, and his Why Writer, which spins when you repeatedly press a switch. He’s fully poseable, though I didn’t think he’d be able to sit up since he’s so top heavy. But I was wrong. With his cape on he manages to sit very well! Alpha Pig is also available.

The Style & Pose dolls and Action Figures are priced at $10.99 each. Because of the small, removable pieces, they are not suitable for children under 3. I love that these are non-electronic, which definitely stimulates imaginative play. Although Princess Presto and Super Why are my daughters’ fave characters, I know I’ll be adding the other two to their collection soon!

my Super Readers!Super Why! Electronic Role Play Sets
These sets are delightful! It’s dress-up fun, kicked up a notch! The Princess Presto Role Play Set includes a pink tiara, a cape, and an electronic Magic Spelling Wand that lights up and says 11 of Princess Presto’s favorite phrases and sounds. I can’t get “Peas and carrots, carrots and peas…” out of my head! The Super Why set includes a mask, a cape, and an electronic Why Writer that also lights up, and has 10 phrases and sounds. I tried on the mask myself and found it to be very comfortable. It’s made out of a soft plastic and molded to fit a child’s face perfectly. The elastic band fits almost any size head. The Super Why and Princess Presto Role Play Sets are great for kids to play with while watching Super Why! so that they can act out the show. I find it hilarious that my toddler answers to “Super Why” now whenever she’s wearing the mask and cape! Each set costs $14.99.

Wave & Learn Magic Spelling Wand
This motion-activated magic wand is actually a handheld learning aid (but don’t tell my daughter that!) It seamlessly combines role playing and learning with 3 different levels of play: Level 1: Letter Sounds; Level 2: Spelling Power; and Level 3: Spelling Challenge.

This is a toy that will grow with your child, as her reading and spelling skills develop – level 1 is helping my daughter learn the entire alphabet and letter sounds, and in level 2 and 3 she’ll be able to spell up to 30 different words. The wand also teaches problem solving, helps with fine and gross motor skills, and encourages following directions. All skills a preschooler needs to work on! Priced at $19.99, I think the Wave & Learn Magic Spelling Wand is a bargain for the hours of learning that will result from playing with this toy. The Zap & Learn Why Writer is also available.

Other highlights in the new Super Why! line are the Why Flyer vehicles, which are only $6.99 a pair, a Super Duper Sketch Computer which lets your child draw pictures and practice writing skills, and a Hovering Why Flyer which will be available soon. All of the toys, like the PBS television program, are best for children 3 and up. One little detail that I noticed on the packaging of every product is a special “Super Why Code” that, when entered on www.superwhycodes.com, gives your child a fun virtual prize and video to watch. Just something to look out for! :)

Later this summer Super Why! toys will be available at other retailers as well. For more about Learning Curve’s Super WHY! product line, please visit www.learningcurve.com/superwhy.
